Drunk Driving BAC Limit May Drop

The amount of BAC, or blood alcohol content, to determine a drunk driver may drop from 0.08 to 0.05. A stricter standard is being recommended by the National Transportation Safety Board in Washington, D.C.

The NTSB advises that all 50 states reduce the level to 0.05 in order to help reduce the slaughter on America’s roads and highways due to drunk drivers, who kill around 10,000 Americans each year.

The NTSB believes reducing the BAC rate to 0.05 could save 500 to 800 lives per year. (more…)

Bar Loses Drunk Driving Verdict

Texas has had dram shop laws since 1987 — laws which hold bars accountable for over-serving customers who are clearly intoxicated. Those came into play last week with a $2.7 million verdict in the case of a drunk driver who seriously injured a woman after leaving a bar.

The head-on wreck happened on Jan. 8, 2011 when an intoxicated Jefrey Tillman, 29, of Devine left the Southside Bar & Grill in Medina County and went the wrong way on Interstate 35, hitting a car head-on. (more…)

Teen driving fatalities curbed by GDL laws

Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) laws such as the one in Texas can help reduce teen auto accident fatalities, a new study finds.

The study observed that teens are in 20 per cent of all auto accidents yet comprise only 5 per cent of all drivers. It’s believed that GDL laws and “use-and-lose” laws involving alcohol abuse can have a positive impact on teen accident numbers. (more…)

TRAFFIC NEWS: DRUNK, WRONG WAY DRIVER ARRESTED

Traffic on North Shepherd near downtown Houston was stalled early Tuesday when a driver going the wrong way on the street collided with a Chevy Suburban headed the right way immediately north of  Interstate 10.

Houston police took the driver into custody. They said the driver was arrested on suspicion of DWI, or driving while intoxicated.

The woman in the other vehicle suffered what were reported to be back and neck injuries. She was taken to a local hospital, according to KHOU, Channel 11.

Police needed about 30 minutes to clear the accident scene, which meant North Shepherd was closed during that time.

Drunk driving is a serious offense. If someone in your family has been injured by a drunk driver, alert a personal injury lawyer or drunk driving attorney with Jim S. Adler & Associates for help. You may be legally entitled to substantial financial compensation.

Traffic deaths drop, but families of 33,808 can’t celebrate

In 2009, fewer Americans died in traffic accidents than in any year since 1950, says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Vehicle crashes killed 33,808 Americans last year, the lowest total since records began being kept in 1950, when 33,186 perished. That’s also 10 per cent fewer traffic fatalities than in 2008.

But before we celebrate, consider the families of those 33,808 victims. Their loved ones remain a statistic — and a grim one — and they cannot celebrate. And if they can’t, why can we?

Fatal DUI accidents are worst in Texas; lawmakers ponder response

Texas lawmakers know they must act, but how is the big question. Our state leads the nation in alcohol-related traffic deaths, and Dallas County is the nation’s third-worst for per capita drunk driving fatalities. Such tragic distinctions cannot continue.

One huge problem is that many drunk driving fatalities are caused by multiple offenders — people who already have been arrested as a drunk driver, but keep driving drunk anyway. While repeat offenders represent only 20 per cent of those arrested for drunk driving, they are a very dangerous one-fifth. How can they be rehabilitated — or kept from driving?

Harris County is nation’s worst for drunk driving car accident fatalities

According to Houston’s Fox 26 TV, Harris County residents are more likely to be killed by a drunk driver than those of any other highly-populous county in the United States. (Harris County ranks third, with more than 4 million residents.)

This sobering threat to public safety is why local law enforcement agencies are gearing up to bring down the number of drunk drivers. They’re doing this via a multi-agency crackdown. Through Labor Day weekend, law officers will be working overtime to spot drunk drivers and get them off our roads, streets and highways.

Another part of the campaign is Choose Your Ride. This program emphasizes that those who drink should do anything but drive a vehicle. Instead, they are urged to take a cab or a bus, or ride with a sober friend or designated driver. Otherwise, they may wind up riding with a police officer — to jail.
